Despite Kyle threatening her family in Kyiv, Balakin insists she is not a triple agent and hates the Russian Federation. She remarks the failed attack on Joe was an SVR probe to confirm her importance they only previously suspected. Joe reluctantly brings her on side. In a briefing with the Lioness team, Balakin explains her role in the SVR is to manage American assets recruited for counterintelligence via similar honeypot schemes. They discover five of her high level assets are Senators, and against Joe's wishes the CIA elect to keep Balakin actively in the SVR instead of pulling her out. Still believing Balakin either is responsible for or works the asset who helped facilitate the attack on her family, Joe gets Westfield to have the White House Press Secretary announce the capture of an unnamed Russian agent, hoping the response will expose further SVR operatives and assets stateside.
